About Us

Welcome  -  Croeso

St. Mary’s is a Catholic school within the Archdiocese of Cardiff.  It provides a high quality education for pupils in Bridgend and its surrounding area.

The school community has produced a great deal of innovative work, always with the aim of providing our children with a curriculum that allows them to achieve academic excellence within a caring and committed Catholic family.  Our website contains a host of detail about our school.  You are very welcome to contact us if you want to find out more.

Staff at St. Mary’s have designed an innovative and challenging curriculum for our children to enjoy.  We have identified core knowledge and skills which we believe they need to acquire and master as they grow. Each class studies a series of domains throughout the year.
They cover the full range of the six Areas of Learning as identified in the Curriculum for Wales:

  • Mathematical Development.
  • Language, Literacy and Communication.
  • Science and Technology.
  • Expressive Arts.
  • Humanities and
  • Health and Well-being.

Our domains cover a broad academic range with titles such as: Climate Change, Ancient Greece, Insects, Astronomy, The Industrial Revolution and the Politics of Wales.

Themes recur as our children move through the school.  This allows them to build on prior knowledge as they make sense of a range of increasingly complex ideas and concepts.

The pattern of domains is illustrated in our ‘curriculum’ area and our approach to teaching and learning is explained in detail in our ‘Teaching and Learning Policy’ which can be found under the ‘Policies’ tab.

In addition to the academic life of the school, St. Mary’s offers an impressive range of extra-curricular opportunities for our children in areas such as: astronomy, athletics, chess, coding, cross-stitching, entrepreneurship, football, netball, public speaking and rugby.

We have strong links with our parishes.  Clergy visit the school often and we have ‘School Masses’ in which our children take a leading role every half-term in St. Mary’s Church.  The Catholic ethos of the school permeates all areas of its life.
